Did you know that as early as the 14th century, Venice was one of the first cities to organise a postal system? It was called the compagnia dei corrieri. Venetians were avid for the 'latest news' since it aided decision making for the many merchants who traded in the grain and spice markets. Venetians would pay a coin, called a gazeta, and have a form of breaking news read out loud to them. The word gazeta means "little magpie" in the Venetian dialect, and is thought to be the origin of the modern word gazette. Here, you can find the lastest news about the novel, The Mascherari.
